This is the second part of a 3-part series. Click here for part 1.
Maybe email sounds boring compared to the undoubtedly sexier allure of social media… But did you know that email marketing generates — on average — $44 of ROI for every $1 spent? That customers who receive email marketing spend 83% more? Or that email marketing is 40 TIMES MORE EFFECTIVE THAN SOCIAL MEDIA at helping businesses acquire more customers? (Visit http://0rbt.us/1A5wvis for more helpful sales and marketing statistics)
So how do you take advantage of everything email marketing can provide? Here is the second of 3 easy tips:
2 – Your subject line is SUPREMELY important!
Many small businesses look at the subject line as an afterthought. But 64% of people say they open an email because of the subject line… So make yours simple, catchy, and intriguing.
It’s also a little known fact that shorter subject lines tend to perform better and that emails with personalized subject lines have a 22% open rate! That may not sound great, but keep in mind that many industries — including consulting, ecommerce, insurance, telecommunications, and marketing/PR all have average open rates under 20%.
If you doubt me on the benefits of a well-constructed subject line, just consider these two examples — which could very well be attached to the same email content — and think about which one you would be more likely to open:
- Acme Inc’s Monthly Email Update: End of year client party on Thursday 12/18!
- Hey Erik, will I see you on Thursday?
Personalizing email subjects is easy. In Mailchimp, all I need to do is insert *|FNAME|* wherever I want to use someone’s first name in the subject or body of the message.
Stay tuned for part 3 of this series!
